How to Get Your Restaurant Found Online in Sri Lanka

When someone in Colombo, Kandy or Galle searches for somewhere to eat, they usually start on their phone. If your restaurant does not show up with a menu, opening hours and photos, they pick someone else. This guide covers the steps that matter most.

1. Claim your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important step. A free Google Business Profile is what makes your restaurant appear on Google Search and Google Maps with your address, phone number, hours and photos. Search for your restaurant on Google Maps, claim it, and verify ownership. If it does not exist yet, create it.

  • Use your exact restaurant name, with no keywords stuffed in.
  • Choose the right main category (for example "Restaurant" or "Sri Lankan restaurant").
  • Add accurate opening hours, and update them for holidays.
  • Add a link to your menu and your website or listing page.
  • Upload real photos of your food, your space and your entrance.

2. Put your menu online as a web page

Many guests decide where to eat after looking at the menu. A menu that exists only as a photo or a printed card cannot be found by search. Putting it online as a readable page, with item names, descriptions and prices, lets search engines and diners find it. A TableTalk listing gives your restaurant its own page with your menu, photos and opening hours, and it is free.

3. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent

Use exactly the same name, address and phone number everywhere: Google, Facebook, Instagram, your TableTalk listing and any directory. Inconsistent details confuse search engines and customers.

4. Ask for reviews

Reviews influence both rankings and decisions. Ask happy guests to leave a review, for example with a small card on the table or a line on the bill. Reply to every review politely, including critical ones. Never offer payment for reviews and never write fake ones.

5. Use the words people actually search for

People search things like "best kottu in Colombo", "vegetarian restaurants in Kandy" or "seafood in Galle". Make sure your listing and website mention your cuisine, your dishes and your city in plain words, because that is how search engines match you to those searches.

6. Be active where your customers are

Instagram and Facebook are where many diners in Sri Lanka discover places. Post good photos of real dishes and link to your menu. Consistency beats perfection: a few posts a week is enough.

7. Make it easy to reach you

  • Show a working phone number and WhatsApp number if you take bookings.
  • Make your address easy to copy into maps.
  • Mention parking, accessibility and any service charge so there are no surprises.

A realistic timeline

Google Business Profile and a menu listing can be set up in an afternoon. Appearing reliably in search takes weeks to months, and depends on reviews and consistent details. Start with these basics and keep them up to date.
