Restaurant Menu Photos: 8 Tips for Great Food Photography with Just a Phone

Good photos help guests choose, and they make your listing stand out. You can take photos that look professional with just a phone, natural light and a little care.

1. Use natural light

Shoot near a window in the daytime, with the light coming from the side. Turn off the flash, which makes food look flat and oily. Avoid shooting under yellow lamps, which change the colours.

2. Keep the background simple

A plain table or a clean surface works best. Move cups, phones and menus out of the frame so the dish is the only thing that draws the eye.

3. Choose the right angle

  • Straight from above works well for flat dishes such as pizzas, rice platters and spread-out meals.
  • A slight angle (about 45 degrees) suits tall dishes such as burgers, cakes and bowls.
  • Get close to the food and avoid showing too much empty table.

4. Shoot food while it is fresh

Photograph the dish right after it is plated. Steam, sauce and fresh herbs look best in the first minutes. Wipe the rim of the plate before shooting.

5. Show the real portion

Photos should match what guests will receive. Over-styled or oversized photos lead to disappointment and bad reviews. Honest, appetising photos build trust.

6. Keep a consistent style

Use the same kind of plate, light and background across your photos so your menu looks organised and professional. A consistent set looks better than a mix of styles.

7. Clean your lens and hold steady

A smudged lens is the most common reason for dull photos. Wipe it with a soft cloth before shooting. Hold the phone with both hands, or rest it on a surface, to avoid blur, and tap the screen to focus on the food.

8. Prioritise your best sellers

You do not need to photograph every item on day one. Start with your most popular and highest-margin dishes, then add more over time. A menu with photos on your top dishes already does most of the work.

Using your photos

Add your photos to your digital menu and to your restaurant listing, and use the same photos on Google Business Profile and social media. Use a clear, bright image as your banner, since it is the first thing diners see.
